VISION AND MISSION

Restoration of the Marketplace: God's Original Purpose for Business The concept of restoring the marketplace to God's original design is central to the prophetic vision given to Gunnar Olson and the mission of the International Christian Chamber of Commerce (ICCC). This restoration calls for a transformation of how business is conducted, moving from self-centered motives like greed and corruption to a Kingdom-centered model that honors God and serves humanity.
--- 1. Biblical Foundation of the Marketplace In Scripture, the marketplace was never separate from God's purposes. It was intended to be a space where commerce, community, and worship intersected. Biblical figures like Abraham, Joseph, and Lydia operated in business with integrity and used their resources for God's glory. Genesis 1:28 – God commanded humanity to "be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion..." This mandate includes managing resources wisely and ethically. Deuteronomy 8:18 – "But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth..." Wealth was designed to sustain communities and expand God's Kingdom, not to accumulate for selfish gain. Proverbs 11:1 – "A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight." This highlights God’s desire for fairness and honesty in business.
--- 2. Business as a Ministry The restoration of the marketplace involves recognizing business as a divine calling and ministry. This means that entrepreneurs, employers, and employees are not just pursuing profits but fulfilling God's purposes through their work. Service Over Selfishness: Businesses should prioritize serving customers, employees, and the community, providing solutions that improve lives rather than exploiting people for profit. Ethical Stewardship: Owners and leaders are stewards of God’s resources and must manage them with integrity, transparency, and accountability. Work as Worship: Daily work becomes an act of worship when done with excellence, honesty, and a heart to glorify God.
--- 3. Healing Corruption and Greed One of the major barriers to God's design for the marketplace is the prevalence of corruption, exploitation, and greed. The restoration involves breaking these cycles and building systems that promote righteousness and justice. Isaiah 1:17 – "Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression..." God calls His people to correct unjust practices in society, including business. Proverbs 13:11 – "Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it." This encourages sustainable growth rather than shortcuts driven by greed. Practical Steps for Healing the Marketplace: Implement ethical business practices that prioritize fairness, environmental stewardship, and community impact. Encourage corporate social responsibility that invests in local communities. Support anti-corruption initiatives and promote accountability in both public and private sectors.
--- 4. Kingdom Economics vs. Worldly Economics Worldly economic systems often prioritize profit at any cost, driven by competition and consumerism. Kingdom economics, however, emphasizes generosity, stewardship, and cooperation under God’s guidance. Acts 4:32-35 – The early church shared their resources, ensuring that "there was not a needy person among them." This model reflects God's heart for provision and equality. Matthew 6:33 – "Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Business leaders are called to prioritize God's will over financial success. Characteristics of Kingdom Economics: Generosity: Sharing profits to support ministries, missions, and social causes. Justice: Fair treatment of workers, suppliers, and customers. Collaboration: Building partnerships that honor God rather than fostering cutthroat competition.
--- 5. The Role of "Joseph Companies" Inspired by the story of Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 41), the prophecy speaks of the rise of "Joseph Companies"—businesses that are strategically positioned to manage resources wisely, especially during times of economic crisis. Preparedness: Like Joseph stored grain for the famine, businesses must be wise stewards, preparing for future challenges. Provision: These companies will provide solutions and relief in crises, reflecting God’s care for people. Influence: They will have influence in economic systems, guiding policies and practices toward righteousness.
--- 6. Practical Applications for Marketplace Restoration For Business Owners: Align business goals with God's purposes through prayer and biblical study. Treat employees with dignity, offering fair wages and healthy work environments. Implement fair trade and sustainable practices. For Employees: Work with integrity, diligence, and excellence as an act of worship. Influence workplace culture positively through Christ-like behavior. For Consumers: Support businesses that operate ethically and uphold biblical values. Advocate for transparency and accountability in the corporate world.
--- 7. A Call to Action The restoration of the marketplace is not passive; it requires active participation. Christian business leaders must rise as reformers, shaping industries according to God's design. This involves prayer, discernment, and the boldness to challenge corrupt systems. Prayer for Marketplace Restoration: "Lord, restore the marketplace to Your original purpose. Raise up righteous leaders who will manage businesses with integrity, compassion, and wisdom. Let businesses serve as channels of Your provision, justice, and love. May greed and corruption be uprooted, and may Your Kingdom values transform our economy. In Jesus' name, Amen." --- In summary, restoring the marketplace means returning business to its God-given role: serving people, stewarding resources wisely, and glorifying God. It is a call for Christian entrepreneurs and leaders to view their work as sacred and impactful in advancing God’s Kingdom on Earth.
